A county seat is the administrative center of a county. This term is most commonly used in the United States. The term county town is used in England, Wales, and Ireland. Although most states have only one county seat per state, some states have more than that. For example, New York, Vermont, and New Hampshire have two.

A city’s status as the county seat can be a source of pride. It can also be a source of jobs. Although every state has them all, I’d like to concentrate today on the most critical county seats in Oklahoma’s historic state.

Newkirk, Oklahoma – Newkirk, Oklahoma, is the county seat for Kay County. It’s located in far North Central Oklahoma. According to the most recent census, 2,243 people were living in Newkirk. It is also known as the “Gem City of the Plains.” In 1984, the entire city’s business district was added to the National Register as a historic area.
